Performance boost for UCAN tools

Currently we are working on a project to further enhance the performance of our software tools. Increased usability and further enhancing the performance speed are among the focal points in this project phase.

Longitudinal model curriculum for communication

The scope of this project is to compile best practice cases in order to complement and then categorize them according to  the NKLM aims for "medical communication techniques" towards a model curriculum for medical communication.  


UCAN currently supports the Medical Assessment Network in their project for competency-based learning, teaching and assessment. The project is a cooperation between 5 German medical faculties.

Selection of past activities

UCAN at the AMEE 215 in Glasgow

September 2015: UCAN contributed to the annual AMEE conference, this time in Glasgow,with scientific input as well as an exhibition booth. The conference was held under the motto "inspire- and be inspired." Accordingly, UCAN shared its experiences of the past 10 years within the cooperation. In addition, visitors could try out the new software developments at the booth. Our partners can download the slides of the presentations in the user forum. 

Tablet summer workshop

August 2015: Delivering exams on tablet computers is getting increasingly popular among institutions around the world. Also among the UCAN partners, the number of institutions switching to tablets iincreases Due to this great interest and high demand, UCAN hosted a one-day summer workshop on "tablet-based assessment" in Heidelberg, where the Apps tOSCE, TEXAM and the server component were presented and trained.


8th UCAN Partners Meeting

February 2015: On February 9th and 10th, all German-speaking UCAN partners met at the University Medical Center Göttingen for the 8th UCAN partner meeting. This year’s meeting focussed on "perspectives for the future of competency-based and quality-assured medical assessment". More than 80 participants from partner institutions as well as invited external guests discussed how the future challenges in medical assessment can be approached in a cooperative manner. 2nd Student Progress Test

November 2014: From November 4th to 15th, the second competency-based student Progress Test will be held at 9 different UCAN partner faculties. After its successful debut last November, almost 500 students have already registered for this year’s test. In addition to the integration of new question types a more detailed feedback for students was developed.  In order to further improve the test, Situational Judgement Test questions (SJT questions) were introduced. Moreover, all questions were completely reviewed by the students in peer review sessions.


UCAN at the AMEE 2014 in Milano

September 2014: From 30.8.-3.09.2014, UCAN attended the annual conference of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE).  At the conference, UCAN shared its experiences with conducting medical assessment in cooperative networks as well as the latest results of the competency-based Progress Test done with UCAN Tools. At the exhibition booth, last year’s tremendous interest in our work continued. In a short-communication on September 2nd, Stefan Wagener from the Progress Test Team at Heidelberg University shared his experiences. The data suggest that despite the complexity of competence-based testing, students were capable to construct good-quality items with the assistance of seniors. 

Competency-based student progress test

November 2013: Eight German medical faculties conducted the first of its kind progress test “from students by students for students”.  With close to 600 applications, the interest in the exam was higher than expected. The three-hour formative self-assessment for students took place at the universities of Heidelberg, Ulm, Tübingen, Mannheim, Witten-Herdecke, Marburg, Magdeburg und Freiburg. Symposium on medical assessment at the GMA

October 2013: At this year’s annual meeting of the Gesellschaft für Medizinische Ausbildung (GMA), the Medical Assessment Alliance bundled its scientific inputs in a two-day symposium on “medical assessment”, which was organized and conducted by its umbrella consortium UCAN.  On the two-day symposium renowned experts from all over Europe shared their insights on current trends and issues in competency-based assessment in medicine with the delegates. One day one of the symposium, the participants discussed European perspectives in current medical assessment. 

UCAN at the AMEE 2013

September 2013: The Medical Assessment Alliance presented itself for the first time under the new name of "Umbrella Consortium for Assessment Networks" at this year's AMEE conference in Prague from 24th to 28th August 2013. More than 3000 attendees from over 100 countries showed large interest in the software tools and solutions. Attendees showed special interest in our solution for OSCEs on tablet computers. After the presentation of tOSCE in a conference session, many examiners came to our booth to get more information about the Server-Client System. Most people were interested to learn more about how the system guarantees technical security and how the QR-code Scanning Feature prevents students to get examined at the wrong OSCE station.

Conference: International Conference in competency-based Assessment

July 2012: Competency-based assessment is a key aspect of The Center for Excellence's remit, which aims to bring the content and format of assessment in medicine closer to professional practice. From July 3rd to 4th 2012, UCAN organized a conference „Competency-based Assessment in Medicine“  in order to brings together our national and international partners, members of the Committee for Assessment of the German Association for Medical Education (GMA) and Medical Faculty Association (MFT), in order to promote professional exchange and to enable a closer cooperation.

The main topics of the conference were state-of-the-art workplace based assessment as well as the various different roles of competencies, e-portfolio and progress-testing.

UCAN team now develops on the basis of the SCRUM model

January 2012:  In a major step to improve its internal workflow the UCAN software developer team has changed its internal organisation along the principles of the SCRUM model. SCRUM is an iterative and incremental agile software development framework with a strong focus on combining holistic project development approaches with maximum flexibility. 

In different "sprints", new releases are developed and released on a structured basis every last Tuesday of a month. 

Due to the change in its organisational structure the software team could improve its work considerabily.

Project: Computer-based Assessment of Clinical Reasoning

2012: In this project, UCAN (in the form of its predecessor MAA) worked together with the medical school of Amsterdam (AMC), Rotterdam (Erasmus MC) and Utrecht (UMCU). The main aim of the project was the creation of a computer-based system for creating and storing assessment items for clinical reasoning.

UCAN has developed a new functionality to store CIP questions into the IMS as well as functions to review CIP and EMQ questions with the UCAN tools. 

The project was funded by the SURF foundation.
